Technology's Effect on Our Health: the Good and the Bad

?Is Technology Making Us Lazy

All manner of technology surrounds us from our personal laptops, tablets, and phones to behind-the-scenes technology that furthers medicine, science
.and education

Emotional problems

Using social media can make you feel more connected to the world. But, comparing yourself to others can leave you feeling inadequate or left out.

negative emotions

Studies have shown that negative emotions can be contagious and transferable from one person to another only through social media! That is, even if you don't encounter an angry, sad or lonely person on the ground, you're prone to feeling these feelings only by reading or interacting with what that person is writing on Facebook or Twitter. Not only that, but you can also be outraged by your reading of some harmful words to you on social media

Sleep problems caused by technology

Sleep problems

Technology in the bedroom can interfere with sleep in a number of ways.

A 2015 study demonstrated that exposure to the blue light that devices emit can suppress melatonin and interrupt your circadian clock. Both of these effects can make it harder to fall asleep and result in
you being less alert in the morning

Sleep disorders

We love our devices so much that many of us even sleep with them.
One study found that 44% of cell phone owners keep their phone next to their bed at night to ensure they don’t miss a thing. In a 2011 poll, 95 percent of adults said they regularly use their devices right before bedtime.

It might seem like a harmless habit, but late-night technology use can interfere with your ability to sleep.

Artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed at night suppresses the release of the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, enhances alertness and shifts circadian rhythms to a later hour—making it more difficult to fall asleep,” says Charles Czeisler, MD, of Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

To avoid sleep disruption, try replacing late-night technology use with sleep-conducive activities such as taking a bath or reading in bed.
Resisting the urge to keep the phone on your nightstand can also help minimize nighttime interruptions.

Sleep Deprivation And Screen Strain
There is evidence that our daily ‘screen time’ has multiple negative effects on our mental health, causing sleep disturbance, headaches and mood problems including Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Depression.

Staring at a screen for too long can exhaust our sight, causing our vision to become blurry, and drying out our eyes. You may also experience tension headaches as another result of digital eye strain. Research shows that excessive tech use – particularly right before bedtime – can have an adverse impact on our sleep cycles thanks to the glowing light that’s emitted from screens.

Musculoskeletal problems caused by Technology

Musculoskeletal problems

When you use a smartphone, the chances are that you’re holding your head in an unnatural forward-leaning position.
This position puts a lot of stress on your neck, shoulders, and spine.

If you’re feeling the pain of technology, you can take the following steps to reduce these issues:

take frequent breaks to stretch
create an ergonomic workspace
maintain proper posture while using your devices.

The Bad

Smartphones Cause ‘Musculoskeletal Problems’
If we narrow our focus we get a snapshot of the ‘trickle-down’ effects that technological advancement is having on our daily health.

The single biggest culprit may be the device you are reading this article on right now: your smartphone – a device which allows us to communicate with anyone in the world, have access to almost all known human knowledge, and which guides our health decisions daily – a device which we are hopelessly addicted to.

This ubiquitous gadget might be harming your health and there seems to be more and more evidence to support this theory.

With the increased usage of smartphones, tablets and laptops, more people are visiting their doctors with musculoskeletal complaints such as ‘tech neck’ (neck strain) or ‘text claw’ (tenosynovitis). Scrolling on Instagram for hours and incessant text messaging is negatively affecting our posture and putting pressure on our necks and backs.

Digital eye strain caused by technology

Digital eye strain

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), prolonged use of computers, tablets, and cellphones can lead to digital eye strain.
Symptoms of digital eye strain may include:
blurred vision
dry eyes
headaches
neck and shoulder pain

Negative effects of Technology on kids and recommendation for screen time by age

Negative effects of technology on kids...

technology appears to affect the health of children and teens.
The researchers used a broad definition of screen time that included:
television
video games
phones
tech toys

Research has linked too much screen time or low-quality screen time to:
behavioral problems
less time for play and loss of social skills
obesity
sleep problems
violence

Like adults, children who spend a lot of time on digital devices can experience symptoms of eye strain.

A 2018 study of adolescents ages 15 and 16 found an association between frequent use of digital media and the development of symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

What are the recommendations for screen time by age?

Younger than 18 months:

Avoid screen time other than video chatting.

18 to 24 months:

Parents and caregivers can offer high-quality programs and watch them with their children.

2 to 5 years:

Limit to one hour per day of supervised high-quality programming.

6 years and above:

Place consistent limits on time and types of media. Media shouldn’t interfere with adequate sleep, exercise, or other behaviors that affect health.

Ways to make the most of technology
If you’re responsible for children:

Limit their screen time, allowing it only at certain times of the day and restricting it during activities like meals and just before bedtime.
Know what they’re doing. Review their programs, games, and apps, and encourage the engaging ones over those that are passive.
Play games and explore technology together.
Take advantage of parental controls.
Make sure that children have regular, unstructured, tech-free playtime.

Encourage face time over online friendships

Technology and nick strain, solutions and prevention

Technology and Neck Strain

When you bend your head down, the head is no longer supported by the whole system of the vertebrae, but only by the neck.
This puts unnecessary strain on the neck muscles and can lead to pain, including tension headaches. Laptops create especially poor posture for the neck, as users tend to hunch down to look at them.

Holding your cell phone between your neck and your shoulder may be a cheap hands-free option, but it also puts your neck in an unhealthy position. Even texting usually involves a lot of hanging your head over your phone.

Solution and Prevention

Use a lower back support in your work chair to guide yourself into a healthier posture.

To avoid constantly looking down, raise your laptop to eye level by placing something under it. You will need to use an external keyboard to type comfortably with your laptop in this position, but the benefits for your neck will be worth it.

Do some exercises. While you’re studying or working, take short breaks to do some simple movements like shoulder rolls.
You may be hunching your shoulders up as you work at the computer without even realizing it. In your free time, try some training exercises to strengthen your neck muscles.
Treat neck pain with ice and heat to soothe sore muscles.

Technology and Vision Problems

Time identifies “Computer Vision Syndrome” as the complex of problems associated with excessive screen time, including eyestrain, blurred vision, and dry eyes.

Solutions and Prevention

Don’t forget to blink! It may sound silly, but we tend to blink less frequently than normal when using a computer. If this doesn’t help, try using artificial tears.

Take a 20-20-20 break. The Mayo Clinic advises staring at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. As an added bonus, staring into the middle distance can be a much-needed break for a tech-addled mind.

Make sure your workspace conditions are optimal. Try to put your computer in a location with adequate lighting and minimal glare, about 20 to 40 inches away from your eyes. Also, watch out for air sources near your desk that can dry out your eyes.

Try a mini-massage. Massaging the muscle around your eyes can help combat fatigue and strain.
Digital eyestrain.

When we gaze at a screen for long periods of time, we often forget to blink. In fact, research has shown we blink 10 times less than usual, which means the tears that protect our eyes evaporate without being replaced. Additionally, reading the smaller fonts on a smartphone or other portable device can intensify the strain.

Sunstroke

Sunstroke

Sunstroke is a kind of the abnormally high temperature in the human body, so this temperature reaches about 40°C and maybe more, and is accompanied by many symptoms that are obvious in the body, nerves and many other symptoms, as the sunstroke is considered an emergency incidental condition, it needs to Immediate first aid, to reduce the appearance of complications and damage to the brain or damage to the organs of the body, and cause death

نتيجة بحث الصور عن ‪dehydration of sunstroke‬‏

Symptoms and causes of a sunstroke

Exposure to sunstroke has serious symptoms on the human body and before you know the symptoms we should know the cause of this build-up of this heat in the human body due to two reasons

-1
The human body produces heat inside it through a process called metabolism, and the body can dissipate this heat in the case that is not affected by the sunstroke and this heat is discharged in two ways

Discharge through radiation through the skin*

Or by sweat that appears outside the skin by evaporation*

But in cases of injury and exposure to high temperature or humidity in summer or extreme fatigue and stress under the hot sun heat, the body cannot discharge this excess heat, which leads to a higher temperature of the human body and may sometimes reach 41°C

-2
Dehydration: Dehydration is a rapid cause of the sunstroke, due to the fact that a person who suffers from dehydration cannot sweat as the normal person because he is unable to get rid of excess heat in his body, which increases the temperature in his body

Symptoms of sunstroke

Very similar to the symptoms of heart attacks or other conditions of the disease, humans are often exposed to symptoms of heat increasing, before the condition reaches the sunstroke, and includes

Feeling nauseous and vomiting, feeling stressed especially in walking. Feelings of weakness and headaches. Feeling contractions and muscle pain. Many people enter into the symptoms of sunstroke, as the symptoms of sunstroke include the following: a noticeable rise in body temperature not to appear sweat, this is usually the first symptom of a rise in temperature, the skin becomes inclined to dry if the sunstroke is caused the high-temperature, but if the cause is stress and fatigue the skin becomes wet

Severe acceleration in the heart rate although the blood pressure remains at its normal rate, but the speed of the heart rate increases until it reaches 130 beats or more per minute, as this is higher than the normal rate at which the heart rate is between 60 to 100 beats per minute normally, due to this Higher body temperatures significantly increase the burden on the heart because the heart exerts itself in reducing it. The speed of breathing is great, which makes breathing superficial. A person may experience seizures that are very similar to epileptic seizures, He may enter a coma that he or she loses consciousness or becomes hallucinating and becomes difficult to pronounce. Feeling severe muscle pain, the person feels pain and contractions in his muscles at the beginning of the feeling of sunstroke, but the muscles then become stiff or relaxed

......................................................................
Complications and factors that increase the incidence of sunstroke. All people in all environments are prone to sunstroke but there are occasional cases in humans of several factors, namely

Human age, the ability of person whether small or large in adapting to extreme temperatures in its effect on the nervous system, and since this nervous system did not complete maturity in children as in the youth group, as it also begins to weaken in the elderly, the rate of exposure to children and older people are more than the young, otherwise these two groups also have difficulty keeping moisture well in their bodies, which causes them to fall into the sun

A person who is a sportsman or who are working outside the home causes them to be subjected to physical stress that increases their risk of being caused by the sunstroke. Taking drugs and medications that expect some people to blow the sun like drugs that affect the body's humidity and temperature and how the body deals with high temperatures so beware here to go out in the hot sun that exposes them easily and quickly to the sun. These medications are such as (high blood pressure medications as these drugs that affect adrenaline, drugs that expel sodium and water from the body, and there are medications that treat mental illnesses, such as delusions)

Complications of sunstroke

When a person is in a state of shock, the body is unable to pump enough blood, which leads to damage to some organs of the body that do not reach the blood well, Delays in sunstroke treatment sometimes cause death as the brain is more likely to be damaged by an emergency bulge occurring in the brain and other organs caused by the sunstroke, if patients do not rapidly treat and reduce body temperature this swelling will lead to death.

Treatment and prevention of sunstroke

Treatment is done in two ways:

*Initial treatment in case of unconscious status, the initial treatment: the patient is transferred to a shaded area away from the sun. The paramedic cools his body and lowers his temperature by removing unnecessary heavy clothing.

The body is sprayed with lukewarm water or a relatively cold heat "colder than the body of the infected person" until the skin blisters are stimulated to the secretion of sweat. Ice cubes are placed around the neck area and the underarm area, where there are blood vessels visible on the surface of the skin. Give the injured the necessary fluids and preferably be cold.

*Secondary treatment when he wakes up from unconscious state and will be treated with alternative medicine

Asphyxiation

Asphyxiation

It often results in partial blockage where the infected person is dislodged to expel the ufo body.

While if it's all you should follow in the Heimlich manoeuvre or Heimlich method.

Heimlich method

Pressure on the internal abdominal, which in turn presses on the diaphragm, which in turn presses on the lungs with the same principle of the action of the normal cough.

The operation should continue until the UFO is removed and if the UFO does not come out and the apnea will be followed by a cardiac arrest and a disturbance of consciousness quickly should do the resuscitation of the heart and lungs.

Signs of asphyxiation:

The person grabbed his neck.

Incapable of coughing

Incapable of speaking

Incapable of breathing

In the case of a pregnant woman or if the person is fat:

The lower chest is pressed at the stomach and then in order to get the ufo from patient's body out.

Signs of asphyxiation in newborns:

*The child stops moving

*Stop making a sound

*Red in colour

*Possible passing out to unconscious state

Notes for asphyxiation in newborns:

You have to press 5 times until the UFO comes out, but with only 3 fingers or two fingers, and if the UFO doesn't come out, we press 10 times and so on until the UFO comes out.

If the child loses consciousness, followed by a cardiac arrest, we have to resuscitate the heart and lungs
